Fire by NightA Civil War pitting countryman against countryman, a rich socialite with clearly wrong motives, and a young soldier hiding a secret that could end their personal valiant fight for their beloved country is the backdrop for this page turning novel. Lynn Austin tells the story of two separate lives and the people surrounding them that eventually intricately weave together. Her unique way of storytelling keeps one interested as each chapter brings you closer and closer to the well written characters and how they live and learn as ordinary people. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you will certainly hope for true love to be found. Beginning at the Battle of Bull Run in 1861, Austin takes you through the four difficult years of America’s Civil War and follows the Union soldier’s point of view and the medical teams of doctors and nurses that assist them. From horrific and overwhelming battles that leave the medical teams in sheer exhaustion to the emotional personal turmoil of finding God, falling in love, losing love, and discovering truth, Austin does a fine job showing you that things aren’t always as they seem. Fire By Night is an interesting and well worth your time read. It is clear by the quality of Austin’s writing why she was the 2002 and 2003 Christy Award winner. Buy Fire by Night From Amazon.com

River Rising by Athol Dickson

River RisingSet in Pilotville, Louisiana, in 1927, Athol Dickson builds line upon line one extraordinary tale of mystery and intrigue. He brilliantly weaves touchy issues together to create suspense, disbelief, and hope for a better tomorrow. Follow the journey of one man, Reverend Hale Porter, to the small swampy outpost on the Mississippi River. His simple task of finding his roots leads him on a search for one missing Hannah Lamont. Porter’s simple steps of obedience open a look into a disturbing past that should not exist in the present. Although the book wouldn’t be considered a thriller, it softly and steadily builds questions in one’s mind and keeps you guessing for what is to come. Just when you think you have his end game figured out, Dickson wraps the story up in a full circle revelation that leaves one wanting to simply obey God and serve one’s fellow man. After reading River Rising you certainly have a bird’s eye view of God’s interesting way of bringing the puzzle pieces of life together. Not only does Dickson lay out an interesting mystery to be solved, but he digs deep into the mind and soul of the Reverend Hale Porter, bringing a good solid message to any Christian today. An enjoyable read from start to finish, Athol Dickson has truly tapped into a fascinating yet disturbing world, with a melting pot of fresh spins on dialogue and character interaction. If this is the kind of writing Athol Dickson delivers, I can hardly wait to dive into some of his earlier works and would certainly hope he has many more to come. Buy River Rising from Amazon.com

The Liberty Bell Series by Gilbert Morris

Filed Under Gilbert Morris, Historical Fiction, The Liberty Bell Series | Leave a Comment

Liberty Bell SeriesClosely following the American Revolution and the involvement of the Bradford family, Morris weaves a tight story of a family divided by loyalties. Daniel and Lyna Bradford are brother and sister who are separated for twenty years. While Daniel finds himself in America working and raising a family, Lyna settles in Europe marrying a solider fighting for England. As the newly birthed America is on the verge of a revolution, Daniels sons join the Sons of Liberty and Daniel finds himself working closely with General George Washington. On the other side of the ocean Lyna’s husband is an officer reluctantly fighting for England. His loyalty to the English Crown brings him to American soil where he must fight in a war he does not believe in. Not only are divided loyalties in the country pitting the families against each other but a complex relationship with a rich landowner named Sir Leo Rochester threatens to bring one member of the Bradford family to their knees. Each book dives into the intricacies of the families as they fall in love, get married, face failures, defeats, heartache, betrayal and victories. A nicely written series interweaving the hardships and excitement of the battles of the American Revolution such as Bunker Hill and Valley Forge, one can’t help but be satisfied with this peek into the time of America’s struggle for freedom and the strong iron resolve of a country that simply would not give up. Poorly dressed and ill-equipped, America’s will was a force to be reckoned with leading the fairly new colonies to final victory over England and true independence for America. The Liberty Bell Series sheds light through a window in our countries birth and struggle to stay alive that wasn’t too long ago. Take a step back in time with Morris as he unfolds a story rich in history and beloved characters that will pull on your heart strings as they sacrifice all to solidify freedom for future generations to come.
